‘Bruchlas’, Saasaig, Isle of Skye (2009)

This house has a small footprint but makes the most of its surprisingly large volume.  It steps down the slope of the hill, creating a beautiful space in the living area and allowing for a huge floor-to-ceiling corner window.  This captures the elevated view across the Sound of Sleat and down the west coast of Scotland.  The window gives access to a deck which sweeps around the south of the building extending to the master bedroom and its wall of glass.

Upstairs are two more double bedrooms and a bathroom. The stairwell is lit by a long slot window, illuminating the oak floor and finishings.    Cathedral like spaces give a luxury feel to a house which appears small from the outside.  Heating is by an exhaust air heat exchanger which uses solar gain and other excess heat to warm the water and the spaces.  This works best with a highly insulated and very well constructed house.  Skye contractor Adam MacDonald has done an exemplary job in achieving this.

Bruchlas is available for rent.  Details can be found here : www.bruchlas.co.uk
