Slatach - Glenfinnan, Lochaber (2008) This estate house is set in the spectacular landscape of Glenfinnan. The clients wanted a modern interpretation of the tacksman’s house, which had to have the character of the old, yet be modern and comfortable. To achieve this, the basic form of the large white Highland house, with rendered walls and slate roof, was kept. A 100mm cavity and 150mm blocks were used to give the appearance of massive walls and the fenestration was carefully balanced to give light, proportion and solidity. Internally the house is open plan but each space is clearly defined. The central feature is the bay window which forms a dramatic envelope for the dining room. The living room has at its central focus a large concrete fire, with an ancient swey built into the nest. An oak stair lit by a long slit window leads to the double height family room, which is similar to the great hall in old tower houses. This is the social centre of the house and has access to a balcony over the bay window. This gives unparalleled views of the loch and mountains. The house is let to stalkers and anglers, hence the requirement for 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, with ample storage space. Warmth is also important given that visitors will come off the hills soaking wet. Large cylinders provide a plentiful supply of high-pressure water, and there is underfloor heating throughout. The ‘wet’ utility room, with direct access to a large shower room and storage, is essential for this house to work as a business. |
