Raasay Hall has won the top prize at this year's IAA Awards. At a prestigious ceremony in Strathpeffer the community project beat off allcomers to be judged the best building in the Highlands in the open competition. The president of the IAA, Calum Maclean, commented,
"Raasay Hall is a very worthy winner. It is a building of exceptional quality and would easily hold good comparison on the international architecture scene."
Speaking after the ceremony, which included a 'Dragon's Den' style panel for the finalists, practice principal Mary Arnold Forster said,
" This came as a real shock but is hugely appreciated. As a practice Dualchas spent a substantial amount of time trying to deliver this building and I'm glad that it is being recognised. This building is certainly a lasting legacy for Lara Adams who was the project architect but has since left us to start a family.
"I would also like to pay tribute to Roland Stiven of the hall committee, who consistently backed the architects in our approach and who, like us, was determined that the quality of the building should not be compromised." To cap a great night for the practice, Dualchas also won the award New Life for an Old Building for Burnside in Elgol, beating all the other regional finalists.
Practice partner, Alasdair Stephen, said,
"The IAA Awards show that the quality of architecture in the Highlands is improving every year. When architects have good clients, as we did on Raasay, great buildings can be achieved."
Dualchas are currenty working on a new community hall for the Isle of Muck which they hope will match the success of Raasay.
