'Tigh na Drochaide' - Duisdale Beag, Skye (2002) This low slung, land hugging house slots effortlessly into its protected embankment setting. Clean white rendering and slate roof re-states the simplicity of the traditional blackhouse form, which is further reflected in the open plan living spaces, centred around the traditional hearth. Thick stud walls and effective solar gaining glazing, also means that energy efficiency is achieved even within this tightest of budgets. Tigh na Drochaide is an effectively simple and sustainable contemporary blackhouse for the 21st century, and hopefully a worthy symbol of the modern Highlands. This house is featured in the exhibition Anatomy of the House. |
