Druim Bàn, Camuscross, Isle of Skye (2004)

Because of its south facing site the house has a slatted trellis to screen the main rooms from the summer sun : The low winter sun warms the house, making good use of passive solar gain. Entry is into a large double-height lobby with a dramatic oak stair leading to a bedroom and study. Downstairs there are two further bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The main living space is divided by a central partition which features built-in shelving and specially created spaces for hanging the clients' artwork. The central feature of the living rooom is the stove and granite hearth, as well as the stunning views over the bay. Granite is used again in the bespoke kitchen. A table designed by Mary Arnold Forster was commissioned from local craftsman Stuart Shone and is the focus of the dining room. The timber used was from an old elm tree which had fallen in the gardens of nearby Clan Donald Estate.
