Longhouse - 3 Glasphein, Skye (2004)

Overlooking a panorama of Glendale in north west Skye, this house is tucked neatly in to an awkward site. By using a timber retaining wall system, the house has been kept in line with neighbouring properties so as to meet planning conditions. Larch decking and fencing maintain the rural aesthetic of the exterior.

A screed floor with underfloor heating acts as a storage heater for the house, retaining heat from passive solar gain. Apart from an open-plan living area, there are two bathrooms, a bedroom and a fitness suite downstairs. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a gallery which overlooks the living room. While the interior is given warmth by the use of oak, the house is all about focussing on the wonderful landscape beyond the full-height glazing.
