Rockmountain, Isle of Islay (2005)

This house was built as a holiday home for a family of four all passionate about Islay. Catherine Heatherington is a garden designer and worked closely with the contractor on site to gently model the land and excavated rock to create new subtle forms in the landscape.

The site on the top of Islay has expansive views west over Loch Gorm to Machir Bay, north to Sanaigmore and west to Jura. The adjacent ruin has been preserved by RSPB as a nesting site for the chough. The 3-bed house has a well lit double height living room with adjacent kitchen and dining space. There is a ground floor bedroom and bathroom and 2 further attic bedrooms and WC. The larch floor is from the borders and the elm worktops from Skye. It is heated with electric underfloor cables and a multi-fuel stove. The water is supplied from a borehole.

The house is simple in form and detail and shelters into the slope. Through its use of large expanses of glass it forms a secret hide from which to watch the ever changing weather and bird life that is a feature of this island.
