Struanmore, Isle of Skye (2004) Dualchas were commissioned to design a home for a couple of outdoor enthusiasts for themselves, their friends, kayaks and bikes. The site is quite small and slopes down from the road towards views of the Cuillins to the south and of Bracadale bay to the west.Stepping down from the car park the house is entered through a larch-clad storage wall, via a small wind lobby for boots and coats, and into a high hall. The staircase is open to the hall and top-lit, bringing light deep into the plan. The ground floor has a bathroom, shower room, utility space and three bedrooms leading onto a deck, the garden and the view. Upstairs is one large space, open to the eaves. There are 3 dormers to the south, a series of rooflights looking over to MacLeods Tables and a fixed window on the west gable, framing a view of Bracadale Bay. There is a limited palette of materials - oak, blue black slate, black granite and mosaic tiles. The drama of the upstairs living space is achieved by careful daylighting of a single simple space. |
