Larch-clad Longhouse - Uig, Lewis (2004) This three bedroom house on the west coat of Lewis will face some of the most ferocious winds in western Europe. With salt spray from the sea this means that the detailing of the larch cladding has to be precise. Dualchas is confident that the cladding will be robust in these extreme conditions and that this building will help show that timber can be an appropriate material throughout Scotland.A stone wall to the back of the building helps define the entrance but also ties the building into the ground and the surrounding landscape of abandoned blackhouses and dykes. Although not obvious at first this house is a development from these ruins. It again follows the longhouse form with open plan living spaces to the front and bedrooms to the back. Upstairs is developed with a gallery, bedroom and en-suite shower room. Downstairs there is an ensuite bedroom, spare bedroom, bathroom, utility room and kitchen to the dining and living area. |
