Fasgadh, Teangue, Isle of Skye (2011) This small whitehouse sits in a prominent position overlooking the Sound of Sleat in south Skye. The brief was to transform a pretty but internally uninspiring house into a modern family home. This was done by building a timber clad parallel structure into the slope at the rear which slides past the south end of the cottage. This has minimised its impact on the landscape and on the original building, while creating a glazed corner that captures the magnificent sea and mountain views. Within this extension on the ground floor is a boot room, utility, kitchen/dining area and double height living room. The feature staircase accesses a gallery, bedroom and en-suite. The cottage itself was stripped back to its stone walls and completely renewed. Despite being transformed with engineered oak flooring, a bespoke staircase, contemporary bathroom fittings and skylights, the integrity of the original spaces have been kept. More importantly the beautiful classical symmetry of the front elevation has been restored with the removal of a clumsy and badly constructed later porch. |
