Sun Room - Ferindonald, Isle of Skye (2003)

The client required that we design a steel and glass sun room for their small traditional cottage in south Skye. The extension had to be modern, to contrast with the cottage, yet not overwhelm its proportions.

The key requirement was to provide a protective enclosure which allows the occupant to fully enjoy the stunning views. Additionally, the steel structure was designed so as to allow the sliding door system to open up fully at the corner, with no posts to obstruct the view.

The structure is fully insulated, with double glazing and electric underfloor heating employed. It is intended that the sun room will also help heat the cottage through passive solar gain.

Concrete grassguard blocks have been used in the landscaping which, in time, will be covered in grass so as to bring the garden right up to the sunroom's threshold.
