'Taigh Bhuachaille', Duisdale, Isle of Skye (2008)

A small cottage at Isleornsay in Skye was in poor condition, but attractive in proportion. The client wanted to turn it in to a family-sized house and exploit the views of the nearby lighthouse, but not spoil the quality of the existing building in the process.

It was therefore decided to put all the bedrooms in a separate wing, connected by a black timber section. This allowed the building to be read as separate blocks, with the black timber referring back to the shed that was on the site.

By knocking through large sections of wall, it was possible to retain the attractive proportions of the cottage, while opening up the building to the views.

The interiors were kept simple and spacious, with high volumes to the living room and master bedroom. Oak floors, grey ceramic tiles and a simple colour scheme show off the client's carefully chosen furniture to great effect.
