Gifford Street, London

This house is in a conservation area and after long negotiations with the planner and conservation officer a strategy to restore the front but peel away the rear was adopted.

The house was gutted and the interior and rear walls virtually re-built.  The basement houses a long kitchen dining sitting area which opens onto a courtyard garden.  The sitting area converts to the second bedroom.  The ground floor contained a more formal living room and the first floor the master bedroom and bathroom.  The new attic storey became a large library and study, opening onto a terrace to the rear taking in the views of Kings Cross and beyond.

Careful restoration of the front elevation combined with a clean palette of materials and new glazing to the rear and above provided a bright contemporary practical home.
