An existing stone ruin is rebuilt; a mirror image is constructed in timber, a glass link between. It frames the sky between stone and larch, the space both intimate and infinite. The tactile surfaces demand to be touched, the journey between the structures connects to nature and lifts the soul.
This is a multi award winning house. When approached from behind the house appears as a modest single storey black gable. From the front it cantilevers dramatically over the shore.
The renovation at Carnoch parish church at Strathconan is a fine example of the many T-plan churches designed by engineer and architect Thomas Telford across the Highlands.
The finished building is a testament to the commitment of the clients to invest in the heritage of their own community.
Located on Cameron Square at the heart of Fort William’s High Street, Highland Cinema forms a new social centre to the town, replacing a dilapidated 1980s development on the site of the old town hall with a bespoke cinema building and café-bar.
Inspired by the blackhouse, this house sits quietly in the landscape. The stone, timber and metal of the outside connect to the materials of the surrounding landscape. Inside, Caithness slate and oak give the house a warm austerity.
Our clients, a family of 5 came to us with a site and a sketch which described their brief. The site is an elevated bare croftland site with views over Dunvegan bay to the Waternish peninsula. It has long views to the north to Isle of Harris and south towards Dunvegan. To the west is a wooded cliff. It is also adjacent to the mother’s sister and her family’s new home.
Dualchas have been selected to masterplan the new Ionad Hiort centre in the UIg area of Lewis. Partnering with Norwegian practice Reuilf Ramstad Architect the internationally important project could transform the economy of the Western Isles.
To take advantage of the views the design solution is a building that acts as a frame for these panoramas. The building is orientated down the slope, with both ends incorporating floor to ceiling glazing.
After winning a limited competition, Dualchas was appointed architect for the new village hall on Raasay. The building is now in constant use - from ceilidhs to indoor shinty, from theatre productions to coffee mornings, it has become a centre for the cultural life of the island.
