On Tiree, a secure home and a place to work are closely connected parts of keeping island life sustainable.

Dualchas was appointed by Tiree Community Development Trust to explore a community-led development at Crossapol combining affordable housing with space for local employment.

A practical island framework
The proposal includes four three-bedroom homes, one fully wheelchair accessible, with room for future expansion. Straightforward forms, efficient plans and shared infrastructure help control construction and running costs while responding to Tiree’s open landscape and exposed climate.

A separate part of the site is allocated for light industrial and commercial units, allowing new or growing businesses to develop alongside the housing.

Rather than fixing every part of the site from the outset, the masterplan establishes a flexible framework that can grow as community needs, demand and funding evolve. It brings homes and employment together as mutually supporting infrastructure for the island’s future.
