Existing buildings carry the materials, energy and endeavours of those who came before us. Retaining and adapting them can preserve that connection with the past while avoiding the waste and embodied carbon of unnecessary demolition.
We start by understanding the building, its history and setting, and your ambitions for it. This helps establish what should be retained, what can change and where intervention can unlock its potential.
Sometimes the right approach is repair and restoration. Elsewhere, a contemporary extension or more substantial transformation can give an existing building new life. We believe new architecture should respect what is already there without necessarily imitating it.
Renovation also brings uncertainty. Existing structures, energy performance, planning and conservation requirements, and construction costs all need to be understood. We investigate these issues early, helping establish priorities and a realistic strategy before major work begins.
Our aim is to respect what we inherit while adapting it thoughtfully for the future, creating buildings that continue to be valued, used and cared for.
