Beside the Crinan Canal, a modest lock keeper’s cottage offered the opportunity to create a lighter, more generous home behind a familiar exterior.
The challenge
The narrow plan, small openings and cellular rooms limited daylight and flexibility. The clients wanted to retain the character of the original white house while making it work better for contemporary life.
Our response
The principal elevations were retained, with changes focused on the interior and less sensitive parts of the building. The plan was opened up, with new openings, rooflights and glazing drawing light deeper into the rooms and connecting them to the garden.
Timber flooring and contemporary joinery bring warmth and consistency, while upgrades to the building fabric and services improve comfort and performance.
