How much needs to change to make a house work better?
The layout and lack of natural light in this 1920s villa in Craiglockhart, south-west Edinburgh, constrained family life. The clients wanted a place to gather with friends and a closer connection to the garden.
Our response
The existing rooms were reorganised and a kitchen extension added at the rear, opening onto the garden. A glazed link brings daylight into the plan and separates the new timber-clad volume from the rendered villa.
Elsewhere, alterations were deliberately restrained, including replacement windows designed to better reflect the original 1920s character.
Materials and design
The timber cladding gives the extension its own character. Inside, the open kitchen provides an informal gathering space alongside the more enclosed rooms of the original house.
