Visitor Centre
Kyleakin, Isle Of Skye
At the gateway to Skye, the building needed to do more than accommodate visitors: it had to turn an arrival into a memorable first encounter with the island.
Dualchas worked with a leading Scottish food producer to develop a visitor destination combining retail, interpretation, hospitality and the practical demands of a working business.
Creating the destination
The site is enclosed by woodland and road infrastructure rather than the dramatic views normally associated with Skye. The architecture therefore creates its own sense of place, using a clear form, an intuitive visitor journey and a strong relationship between the public experience and the story of the brand.
Arrival, orientation and movement were considered together. Visitors are drawn through a sequence of spaces that explains the products and process, while retail and hospitality feel integrated rather than added on. Operational areas, storage and servicing are carefully separated so the building works efficiently behind the scenes.
Supporting growth
Developing the brief alongside the business allowed the architecture to support both the visitor experience and future commercial growth. The result is a distinctive destination that communicates quality, gives visitors a reason to stop and presents the company’s work within a setting rooted in Skye.
