25 Camuscross

Isle of Skye

Two small retreats turn a steep, marginal part of a working Skye croft into a place people travel to experience.

At 25 Camuscross, the clients wanted high-quality holiday accommodation that would support the family croft while making the most of elevated views across the Sound of Sleat to Knoydart.

Placed for privacy and view
The two one-bedroom buildings are terraced into the slope rather than set side by side. Each has privacy and an uninterrupted outlook, without the site feeling like a conventional holiday development.

Dark, simple forms recall the agricultural sheds of the crofting landscape. Inside, continuous oak panelling brings warmth to the compact bedroom, bathroom and open-plan living space. Full-height glazing keeps sea, sky and weather present throughout, while decks extend each retreat into the landscape.

The interiors were developed with BoConcept Scotland using leather, felted wool and other durable materials in understated tones. The architecture gives the business a clear identity while allowing the croft and view to remain the principal attraction.

25 Camuscross demonstrates how carefully designed rural tourism can create a productive new use for difficult land without losing its working character.
