Isle of Skye

Black h turns a stay on Skye into a journey between two horizons.

Jason and Sarah Bold had already created Wood h with Dualchas. For Black h, they wanted a more intimate retreat for two on their working croft at Harlosh—somewhere private, memorable and inseparable from the landscape.

Two views, one experience
The elevated peninsula looks north-west towards MacLeod’s Tables and south-east towards the Cuillin. A simple dark form stretches between them, with full-height glazing at each end. Morning light, evening skies and changing weather accompany guests as they move through the split-level bedroom, kitchen, dining and living spaces.

Two terraces extend the compact plan outdoors. Blackened timber gives the building a strong identity while allowing it to recede against the moorland; inside, white surfaces and oak bring warmth and calm. Bespoke furniture by Namon Gaston includes a four-metre oak sofa designed specifically for the living space.

The architecture is part of the reason to visit, but never competes with the place. A limited palette and precisely framed views allow Skye to remain the principal experience.
